“Sharing Stories” Program: “Diverse by Cultures, United by Stories”
The Immigrant Writers Association (IWA) has been recognized by the Government of Canada for its outstanding Sharing Stories Program for immigrant seniors, newcomers, and racialized people.
This innovative project aims to connect participants through stimulating storytelling sessions. Facilitated by experienced IWA representatives, the sessions encourage storytelling, cultural exchange, and mental well-being.
Each session starts with immigrant authors reading an excerpt of their work, which spark discussions based on personal experiences of participants, encourage personal growth, and help foster social connections.
Running from July 2024 to February 2025, the program features an online and in-person group sessions, fostering community, enhancing language skills, and reducing social isolation among participants.
Every Thursday of December and January, the Diverse by Cultures, United by Stories sessions welcome participants to warm up around a virtual fireplace to listen and share stories with a multicultural flavour. Each session has a unique theme.
In January, three sessions focus on Storytelling for Effective Job Search, to help participates understand the storytelling power in the professional settings.
This initiative aligns with the national priorities by promoting diversity, and inclusion, wellbeing, and healthy ageing, to benefit participants and strengthen community ties.
