PRESS RELEASE
IWA, encouraging immigrants to express themselves through writing
TORONTO, October 12, 2018 – The Immigrant Writers Association’s (IWA) Board of Directors has elected Gabriela Casineanu as the organization’s first President and Chair, and appointed Andreea Munteanu as the organization’s Executive Director. This election follows IWA’s first Annual General Meeting held in September in Toronto.
“Besides being a creative and healing process, writing builds bridges between different cultures, inner and outer worlds, what is and what could be! Inspired by my own journey as an immigrant and award-winning author, I felt the need to encourage more immigrants to express themselves through writing. We have so much to offer to this world! Thanks to the other 12 co-founders who believed in this idea, IWA became a non-profit corporation with a great mission. It’s an honour to lead IWA’s first Board of Directors, and we look forward to shaping IWA’s first steps toward its vision!”, says Casineanu.
Gerard Keledjian will serve as Vice President, Guillaume Lorin as the Secretary, and Malika Mounir as the Treasurer.
Each of the Directors is a multi-faceted professional with deep community knowledge, has a passion for writing and the desire to build a thriving organization that taps into the richness of immigrants’ cultures, experiences, ideas, and expertise.
The Board provides leadership for carrying out IWA’s mission to provide programs, activities, and services that empower and support immigrant writers in their journeys and is committed to encourage immigrants to express themselves through writing, to bring more awareness, compassion, and peace into the world.
The Board of Directors has also issued an open call for nominations to fill the fifth seat on the Board of Directors, which is currently vacant.
